Campaign receives first gold coin

CRYSTAL LAKE – For the 26th consecutive year, a gold coin was dropped in a McHenry County Salvation Army kettle.

The quarter-ounce gold coin was found Wednesday night during a count of collections from the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, said Maj. John Price. It was dropped off at a kettle in front of the Crystal Lake Jewel-Osco store, 6140 Northwest Highway, he said. Price said he did not know how much the coin was worth.

“It’s a tradition, and it’s pretty amazing,” he said.

Every year since 1982, a gold coin has been placed in one of the organization’s kettles, Price said. The coin will be sent to The Salvation Army headquarters in Chicago and then sold by a coin dealer. Proceeds from the sale of the coin will be returned to the McHenry County Salvation Army, Price said.

A silver bar was found in another kettle Nov 28. Price did not know the value of that 1-ounce bar, which was placed in a kettle in front of the McHenry Jewel-Osco, 4222 W. Elm St.

Such donations are especially important this year as the McHenry County Salvation Army hopes to raise $175,000 through its Red Kettle Campaign.

The organization recently has been hit on both ends because the economy isn’t doing well.

Not only do people give less, but they also need more, Price said. This year, the need is up about 30 percent, while donations are down about 10 percent.

Money raised from the Kettle Campaign goes into The Salvation Army’s general fund and, aside from Christmas assistance activities, goes toward the multiple programs they sponsor, such as Youth Summer Camp and Women’s Ministries.
