Man dies in 2-car crash

A Kane County car crash near Sugar Grove left a Marengo man dead Friday night.

William J. McKenzie, 54, of 418 N. State St. Marengo, was pronounced dead at the scene after a two-vehicle crash on Route 47 near Merrill Road north of Sugar Grove, according to information from the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.

Police responded to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports of victims trapped in their vehicles.

According to a release, the initial investigation showed that Linda L. Knotts, 44, of 318 Dempsey, Apt. 304, Elburn, was driving a Chevy S-10 Pickup south on Route 47 when she crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic. She then collided head-on with a McKenzie, who was driving a Ford Windstar.

Knotts was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Route 47 was closed between Scott and Harter roads while crews cleared the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the Kane County accident reconstruction team and sheriff’s detectives.

It was unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. No charges or citations had been filed late Friday.
