Learn of hidden wealth at April 18 event

CRYSTAL LAKE – Residents who would like to learn to manage debt – and discover whether they might possess unknown riches – are invited to a “Slaying the Debt Dragon” and Cash Dash event April 18.

Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias’ office is hosting the gathering from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. April 18 at Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 Paddock St., according to a news release from the treasurer’s office.

Participants will learn how to balance spending and saving and how to pay down debt.

“Americans’ savings rate is at the lowest point since the Great Depression,” Giannoulias said. “We want to teach residents how to better manage their money, get out of debt, and save – even during the holiday season.”

The Cash Dash program reunites Illinois residents with unclaimed property. This “hidden wealth” can be anything from long-lost bank accounts to entire estates that never made it to a rightful owner.

The treasurer’s office is hosting the presentation as one of more than 450 free classes, seminars and activities promoting financial education that will take place during Money Smart Week Chicago, which is April 18-25.
