For the last five years, Michael Pierce has been walking in the Chicagoland Breast Cancer 3-Day for his sister, Linda Jeskie.

The Cary man lost Jeskie after she had battled breast cancer on and off for 30 years. She was age 21 when she was diagnosed the first time, and recovered twice.

However, years later, the cancer came back and spread to her entire body. She eventually lost her fight in October 2003.

Pierce will soon be among thousands of supporters during an event that takes place at different dates across the country and consists of a 60-mile walk during three days to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. One hundred percent of the money goes toward Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, foundations that support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.

The Chicagoland 3-Day is scheduled for Aug. 7 through 9.

Pierce has been training since January for the walk. In the last few years he's participated, he's experienced a bit of everything – including fellow walkers collapsing nearby from exhaustion.

"It's probably the hardest thing, mentally and physically, that I could do," Pierce said. "But it's also the most rewarding."

Each participant is expected to raise $2,300. Pierce said he hopes to raise $5,000 this year.

To help with donations, he is planning a fundraiser on May 31 at Durty Nellie's Pub, 180 N. Smith St. in Palatine. Musical performances are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., featuring sets from local bands Crosstown and The New Invaders.

Pierce will also host a raffle, to include two round-trip flight tickets on United Airlines to anywhere in the continental United States, overnight stays at bed-and-breakfast inns, and Chicago Bears game tickets.

Admission costs for the event will be determined in the coming weeks.
