Pong stars post video

Steve Olson of Lake in the Hills and a few of his friends at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais can do some pretty impressive things with ping pong balls.

Olson, a sophomore at the university and a graduate of Jacobs High School, is part of a group of about eight students called The People’s Elbow. They play intermural sports, hold Bible studies, and socialize.

They also like to make up competitions, like who can shoot a Nerf dart the farthest, or who can roll a basketball the farthest down a narrow dorm hallway. They made a video of their most recent competition – throwing and bouncing ping pong balls into cups – that was featured on sportsillustrated.com this week. By Wednesday afternoon, the video had nearly 155,000 views on YouTube.

“We originally had very small expectations for the video and its view basis,” Olson said. The video features Olson, Matt Compton of Morton, David Anderson of Wisconsin, Michael Schimp of Michigan, and Paul Conzen of Lake in the Hills.

Olson said it took a while to get some of the shots in the video.

“It was definitely a lot of repetition,” he said. “I would be amazed if anyone could make them on the first try.”
