Paintball field, batting cages could be built in Holiday Hills

HOLIDAY HILLS – A paintball field could open in Holiday Hills as early as this month.

The owner of Reliable Sand and Gravel is seeking a conditional-use permit that would allow 10 acres of his property to be converted into a paintball field. The permit request will be discussed at a village meeting tonight.

“He wants to do paintball and eventually batting cages,” Village President Mickey Brown said.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. today at Village Hall, 1304 Sunset Drive, in Holiday Hills.

Brown said that Reliable’s owner, Don Roberts, was working on the project with a local company called Panik Attack Productions.

The location of the proposed facility would be the northwest area of the intersection of River Road and Fernview Drive.

The permit would authorize the “construction, maintenance and operation” of an outdoor paintball facility and other facilities, including pro, tech and concession shops, as well as a driving range, outdoor batting cages and miniature golf.

According to the Panik Attack Productions Web site, pappaintball.com, the attraction is set to open July 25.

The permit request must be reviewed by the Zoning Board of Appeals. The village board then will consider the ZBA’s recommendation but maintains final say. Brown said the concept already had received a warm response.

“The Village Board has already talked a little bit about it, and it’s very favorable,” Brown said. “Odds are it will get a good response.”

Reliable is the only business in town, and officials are eager for more streams of revenue.

“We’re pretty much a bedroom community,” Brown said. “Eventually that gravel pit will be done mining, and then [there’s] nothing.”

Efforts to reach Roberts or a representative from Panik Attack Productions were unsuccessful Wednesday.
