Lesser role for Linebrink

White Sox reliever Scott Linebrink will not appear in the eighth inning of close games while he sorts out his control issues, and outfielder Dewayne Wise will spend 15 days on the disabled list.

Octavio Dotel, Tony Pena and D.J. Carrasco could combine to fill the main right-handed setup role opposite left-hander Matt Thornton in the bullpen, Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. Linebrink surrendered a three-run home run in the eighth inning Monday and has struggled badly since the All-Star break.

"I want him to relax a little bit more," Guillen said before Tuesday's game. "Don't feel like every time, he's pitching in the spotlight."

If Linebrink pitches well in easier situations, Guillen said, he will regain the main right-handed setup role in the bullpen.

Meanwhile, Wise was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. The team needed to clear a roster spot for Freddy Garcia, who starts tonight. Expect Wise to rejoin the Sox when rosters are expanded in September.

Garcia and the Sox face the Royals at 7:11 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet.
