Bears add linebacker

The Bears signed third-year linebacker Tim Shaw to a one-year contract and placed Brian Urlacher on injured reserve Monday evening.

Shaw, 25, appeared in 14 games with the Carolina Panthers in 2007 and played in three games with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. The Bears likely will use Shaw on special teams, where he has 17 tackles in 17 career games.

The Panthers drafted Shaw in the fifth round (164th overall) of the 2007 draft. He played linebacker at Penn State.

Seven-year veteran Hunter Hillenmeyer will start at middle linebacker in place of Urlacher, while Nick Roach could fill in for Pisa Tinoisamoa at outside linebacker. Tinoisamoa sprained his right knee Sunday against the Packers, but the Bears did not say how much time he could miss.

Urlacher will miss the rest of the season because of a dislocated right wrist.
