Col. Palmer House receives museum award
The Illinois Association of Museums recently announced that the Colonel Gustavus A. Palmer House has been awarded the Small Institution of the Year Award. The award will be presented at the Illinois Association of Museums Awards banquet on Oct. 2 in Bloomington.
The Colonel Palmer House was noted for being an excellent example of a successful partnership between a private nonprofit organization, the Crystal Lake Historical Society, and a large public entity, the Crystal Lake Park District.
"This cooperation resulted in a wonderfully restored historic home which serves as a local history museum, an archive library and a facility for heritage events," a press release from the Crystal Lake Park District said.
The Colonel Palmer House is located at 660 E. Terra Cotta Ave. in Crystal Lake. The home is open to the public from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and for scout programs by appointment. Those looking for something new for a club's monthly meeting are encouraged to schedule a meeting at the Colonel Palmer House.
Costumed staff will make all the arrangements, including a program on the Palmer family history and tour of the home. A full schedule of history-based Girl Scout and Cub Scout programs also is offered by the Colonel Palmer House staff.
