Briggs laughs off report

Bears linebacker Lance Briggs had some fun with reporters Thursday after a television anchor reported that the Bears captain had broken his foot and was wearing a walking boot.

That was never the case. Although Briggs sat out of Wednesday's practice, he walked without a limp, and the team gave every indication that he would be fine to play Sunday against Detroit.

"To correct some people on what happened on my foot, it started off as a hairline fracture, and then it increased yesterday to a major break," Briggs said as he tried to stifle a smile. "So [they] put me in a boot, and I just – a miracle. Overnight healing. It's something else. I've never seen anything like it. And now I'm not even wearing a boot."

So amputation would not be necessary?

"Not necessary," Briggs said. "Not with today's modern medicine. It's a marvel. And now, hey, we're getting ready for Detroit."

Bears linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and tight end Desmond Clark also provided injury updates Thursday at Halas Hall.

Clark has missed the past two games because of a rib injury. He took part in limited drills Wednesday and was expected to do the same Thursday.

"I'm trying to do all the rehab that they ask me to do," Clark said. "Hopefully this week, I'll be able to give it a go."

A rib injury forced Hillenmeyer to leave Sunday's game at Seattle. He guarded his comments Thursday, although it appears unlikely that he will be able to start against the Lions.

"It's feeling better every day," Hillenmeyer said. "I'm just going to do what the doctors tell me. Obviously, I want to play. I always want to play. It'll be up to them, not me."
