Rangers bust out of losing slump against Coyotes
NEW YORK – Marian Gaborik scored two goals and added an assist as the New York Rangers broke out of their funk with a 5-2 victory against the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night.
The Rangers netted two goals on five shots in the first period and two more on only six more attempts in the second to chase goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
Gaborik’s first score of the night gave New York a 2-0 lead, and his second – the 10th this season – made it 4-0. In between, Gaborik set up Vinny Prospal for another goal.
The Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak (0-2-1) that came on the heels of a seven-game winning run. Artem Anisimov scored for the second consecutive game, Enver Lisin added a third-period goal, and Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves for the Rangers.
Canadiens 3, Islanders 2 (OT): At Montreal, Roman Hamrlik scored 1:32 into overtime to lift Montreal to its fourth consecutive win.
Hamrlik took Tomas Plekanec’s centering flip pass from the right side on a 2-on-1 and put a shot into the open left side.
Jeff Tambellini drew New York even for the second time 15:24 into the third with his second power-play goal of the game.
Maple Leafs 6, Ducks 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Niklas Hagman scored three of Toronto’s five power-play goals, and the Maple Leafs finally earned their first victory of the season against the last-place Anaheim Ducks.
Tomas Kaberle scored a career-high five points and Lee Stempniak added a career-best four as the Maple Leafs (1-7-1) finally slowed the worst start in the Original Six franchise’s history.
