Spartans coast after sloppy start
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half, Kalin Lucas scored 21 and No. 2 Michigan State pulled away from Florida Gulf Coast for a 97-58 victory Friday night.
The Spartans (1-0) started sloppy and sluggish, but Summers’ go-ahead dunk on an alley oop sparked a 17-4 run that put them in control. Michigan State then coasted to its 33rd consecutive win in a home opener and 40th in a row against a nonconference team at the Breslin Center.
No. 7 Purdue 89, Cal State Northridge 64: At West Lafayette, Ind., Robbie Hummel scored 17 points to help Purdue beat Cal State Northridge in the season opener for both teams.
Hummel also had six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
JaJuan Johnson scored 15 points, freshman reserve D.J. Byrd scored 13 and Chris Kramer added 11 points and four assists for the Boilermakers, who were playing without starting point guard Lewis Jackson. He was serving a one-game suspension for playing in an unspecified NCAA-sanctioned event without approval from his coach and compliance director.
No. 25 Minnesota 87, Tennessee Tech 50: At Minneapolis, Lawrence Westbrook scored 22 points, and Minnesota won its season opener.
The senior guard, who led the Gophers (1-0) with 12.6 points a game last season, keyed a 16-5 run to start the second half and help Minnesota pull away. After the run, the Gophers led by at least 22 points the rest of the way.
Penn State 70, Penn 55: At State College, Pa., Talor Battle had 27 points and 10 rebounds as Penn State debuted its 2009 NIT championship banner with a win against Penn.
Jeff Brooks added 10 points for the Nittany Lions (1-0), who won their sixth in a row dating to last spring’s run to take the postseason NIT title.
Indiana 83, Howard 60: At Bloomington, Ind., Indiana freshmen Maurice Creek (17), Christian Watford (14) and Derek Elston (14) scored in double digits, and Indiana won for its 25th consecutive win in a home opener.
