Naughton tops 1,000 points at DePaul in Demons’ win
CHICAGO – Deirdre Naughton scored 20 points, topping 1,000 in her DePaul career to help the No. 17 Blue Demons beat North Dakota State, 77-65, on Sunday.
The senior guard passed the milestone with a layup at the 17:15 mark of the first half. She has 1,019 points for her three DePaul seasons and 1,438 points for a four-year career including her freshman year at Wake Forest.
The Blue Demons (2-0) never trailed and opened a 20-point lead by half.
No. 2 Stanford, 81, No. 25 Rutgers 66: At Piscataway, N.J. , Kayla Pedersen scored 22 points, and Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 21 to help Stanford power past Rutgers.
No. 3 Ohio St. 91, Bowling Green 72: At Columbus, Ohio, Jantel Lavender had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead Ohio State to a win against Bowling Green in the quarterfinals of the Preseason WNIT.
No. 4 Notre Dame 102, Ark.-Pine Bluff 57: At South Bend, Ind., Becca Bruszew-ski had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Notre Dame dominated inside, opening the season with a rout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Texas A&M 95, No. 6 Duke 77: At College Station, Texas, Danielle Adams scored 24 points in her Texas A&M debut, and the Aggies stunned Duke.
No. 8 Tennessee 74, No. 7 Baylor 65: At Knoxville, Tenn., Shekinna Stricklen had 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead Tennessee in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.
No. 9 LSU 92, Centenary 19: At Baton Rouge, La., senior guard Allison Hightower scored 20 points before sitting for most of the second half, and LSU routed Centenary.
The 73-point margin of victory was the second-largest in LSU history, three shy of the 104-28 win against Prairie View A&M on Dec. 1, 1995.
No. 10 Michigan St. 71, Detroit 62: At Detroit, Aisha Jefferson scored 16 points to help Michigan State beat Detroit for its first win of the season.
No. 21 Georgia 62, No. 13 Oklahoma 51: At Athens, Ga., Porsha Phillips and Jasmine James each scored 15 points, and Georgia held off Oklahoma’s second-half comeback.
No. 14 Virginia 86, Manhattan 68: At Charlottesville, Va., Monica Wright made her final 10 shots from the field and scored 25 of her game-high 31 points in the second half to lift Virginia.
No. 16 Arizona St. 73, S. Dakota St. 64: At Tempe, Ariz., Becca Tobin scored a career-high 18 points as Arizona State won its opener.
No. 18 California 100, Idaho St. 43: At Berkeley, Calif., freshman DeNesha Stallworth scored 17 points as Cal opened its season with a rout of Idaho State.
Oklahoma St. 70, No. 19 Georgia Tech 64: At Stillwater, Okla., Andrea Riley scored 24 points, and Tegan Cunningham had 20 points and 10 rebounds as Oklahoma State beat Georgia Tech in the second round of the Preseason Women’s NIT.
No. 20 Kansas 106, Oral Roberts 80: At Lawrence, Kan., Danielle McCray scored 21 of her 27 points, helping Kansas open the season with a resounding win against Oral Roberts.
No. 22 Vanderbilt 90, Lehigh 54: At Nashville, Tenn., reserve Tiffany Clarke scored 14 points and Vanderbilt rolled to a victory over Lehigh.
No. 23 Louisville 65, Dayton 63: At Dayton, Ohio., Monique Reid had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Louisville to a win.
No. 24 Middle Tennessee 78, Central Florida 53: At Murfreesboro, Tenn., Alysha Clark had 32 points and 15 rebounds for her 56th career double-double, leading Middle Tennessee to a victory.
