Chicago Blackhawks

Versteeg out with injury

Three days after forward Dave Bolland was placed on injury reserve, forward Kris Versteeg was out of the line-up because of an unspecified upper body injury.

“We think the injury is very short term,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “Hopefully, he’ll skate when we practice on Tuesday.”

Recalled from the Rockford IceHogs to take his place, forward Bryan Bickell made an immediate contribution.

He had a plus-two defense rating in 12 minutes, 28 seconds of ice time.

Bickell had four goals, seven points and 26 penalty minutes in 16 games with the IceHogs this season.
The 23-year-old was scoreless in two games with the Hawks this season.

Kane, Toews share the same line: The absence of Versteeg prompted Quenneville to reunite Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews on the same line.

“We were talking about how weird it was the other day,” Toews said.
“We’re so used to playing on the same line in training camp and practices and games, but we hadn’t been together at all this year. I think it worked pretty good tonight.”

Quenneville said the decision to keep them apart had more to do with defensive considerations than anything else.

Sharks, Hawks have top power-play units: The Sharks and Hawks entered the game with the No. 1 power play on the road and No. 2 penalty-kill unit at home, respectively.

The Sharks converted 1-of-4 chances with the manpower advantage.

Hawks pay tribute to Roenick: The organization paid tribute to former Hawks forward Jeremy Roenick before the game.

Roenick retired in August after 20 seasons, the first eight of which he spent in a Hawks uniform.

He ranks seventh in goals (267) and eighth in points (596) in franchise history.
