A lawyer for detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay has been invited to speak at McHenry County College as part of an ongoing discussion series hosted by a student peace group.

Marc D. Falkoff, a criminal law professor at Northern Illinois University, is scheduled to speak about a book of detainee poetry titled “Poems from Guantanamo: Where is the world to save us from torture?” at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at the college’s conference center, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

Falkoff edited the book of poetry and served as the principal lawyer in representing the unlawful detainment action of 17 Guantanamo detainees, according to a news release from the Student Peace Action Network.

The subject matter is especially timely given recent talks of transferring Guantanamo detainees to an underused prison in the Northwestern Illinois city of Thomson, SPAN action coordinator Molly McQueen said.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
