CHICAGO – Body-scanning security equipment is headed to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino on Tuesday said the Transportation Security Agency planned to bring full-body scanners to O’Hare sometime in the first half of 2010. The department said it had no details on the number of scanners or whether they’re the type critics have called “virtual strip searches.”
O’Hare has 12 security checkpoints, each with several lines.
Body-scanning technology might have prevented the Christmas Day attempt to blow up a jetliner that landed in Detroit. The suspect in that case didn’t go through a scan when his flight began in Amsterdam.
At least 19 U.S. airports have the scanners.
