Accepting my nerdiness
I’ve come to the conclusion that you are unable to grow out of being a nerd.
I’ve gone through three phases in my adolescence: adoration of my nerdiness, disguising it, and finally realizing there’s nothing I can do or say that will let me change.
The first stage involved me spending my 13th birthday with a bowl of popcorn and all six (yes six) Star Wars movies. It involved spending class periods sitting in the library reading Harry Potter fan Web sites.
The second stage involved the most energy. It took all of mine to hide from the world that my ideal after-school activity involved E-rated computer games filled with spells and “using the force.”
Then, as in any step process, there is acceptance. I figured, why hide my tendencies when really … how many other people hide how nerdy they are? How many people stayed up late on Christmas Eve to watch the Star Wars marathon? I did.
