GLENDALE, Ariz. – His start canceled by rain, Jake Peavy sat in front of a computer and sang while strumming his guitar.

Peavy was practicing for the Woodjock Jam Fest, a charity event Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz. On the field he’s getting ready for what he hopes will be a healthy season.

After the White Sox’s game Sunday against the Cubs was canceled because of rain, the right-hander threw 45 pitches in a covered batting cage, improvising game conditions in lieu of what would have been his spring-training debut.

“We made the best of a tough situation,” Peavy said. “Obviously, you want to stay on schedule. We talked about backing it up to [today] and getting in the game, but then you’d be coming back on short day’s rest ... just to stay with the workouts in between and on schedule was more important to me. I got as good a look as I could.”

Peavy said he threw all of his pitches as hard as he would have thrown them in a game. He’s on schedule to start Friday in Tempe in a split-squad game against the Los Angeles Angels.

“I had to treat it like a game. I wasn’t in there going through the motions of a [bullpen],” Peavy said. “I was putting a little something on it. I had hitters in there swinging the bat. They hit the ball right back at you with no screen in front of you, so you had to be ready and prepared.

“I was very pleased,” he added.

Peavy hopes to pitch for three innings Friday; Sox starters have gone two innings in their first starts of spring training.

Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said getting the pitchers’ work in was more important when inclement weather affected games.

“You’ve got to be aware and be prepared for this kind of weather,” Guillen said. “As a manager ... you don’t want it to rain because you want everybody to get ready.”

Notes: The Sox tentatively scheduled a “B’’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers for
10:30 a.m. today.
