Foggy conditions may have contributed to fatal morning crash

CHEMUNG – A Wisconsin woman who was on her way to work is dead after her pickup truck was struck by a semi early Tuesday morning, police said.

The crash at the intersection of Lawrence and State Line roads in Chemung Township happened before 6 a.m., said Sgt. Karen Groves of the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

Elizabeth Shults, 52, of Evansville, Wis. was traveling east on State Line Road when she was hit by the semi, which was traveling south on Lawrence Road. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the semi did not stop at a stop sign, and extremely foggy conditions likely were a factor, Groves said.

The McHenry County Coroner's Office is handling the death, while the crash investigation is being done by the Walworth (Wis.) County Sheriff's Department. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

The intersection was shut down for more than six hours for the investigation, Groves said.
