WAUCONDA – A three-barn fire on a farm in Wauconda has delayed both northbound and southbound traffic on Route 12.
Vehicles heading southbound near West Case Road are being redirected, while traffic northbound is down to one lane.
Firefighters were called out about 11:29 a.m. today to a report of a possible barn on fire near the intersection of West Case Road. Crews arrived within about four minutes, but because of strong winds and a lack of nearby water hydrants, about 30 area departments eventually responded to the scene.
When members of the Wauconda Fire Protection District arrived, fire was coming out of the doorway of a middle metal barn. Another metal barn and a wood barn are located on either side.
As the wind took hold of the flames, the fire spread to both other barns, said Wauconda Fire Division Chief of Training Albert Schlick III.
All water had to be brought in via tankers. Within 10 minutes, all three barns were fully engulfed.
The barns mostly contained grass and hay, Schlick said. No animals or people were injured.
Schlick said he believed the barns belong to Golden Oaks Farm.
The fire was under control in about an hour, but crews will remain on scene for several hours of overhaul.
