Fire damages Oakwood Hills home

OAKWOOD HILLS – Fire damaged an Oakwood Hills home early Saturday morning.

No one was injured in the fire at 112 Hickory Road. The family living there was outside before firefighters arrived at the scene around 9:30 a.m.

At the home, firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from the garage. They immediately called for backup from nearby departments because there were no hydrants in the area, said Lt. Andy Veath, of the Cary Fire Protection District.

“We had to bring in all the water,” he said. “Tankers were key to putting this out.”

Tanker trucks had to pump water several hundred feet down a hill to reach the house. A staging area was set up nearby to coordinate the efforts.

Flames in the garage, located directly beneath the main level, spread throughout much of the house. Firefighters put out the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

Fire, smoke and water damage left the house uninhabitable. A car that had been in the garage was destroyed in the fire.

The raised ranch-style home was built in 1978, according to Nunda Township property tax records.

The family had lived in the home for more than a decade, said Brian McMillan, a neighbor. Firefighters did not know where the family was staying Saturday night, but McMillan said they had relatives in the area.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire, Veath said.

After the fire was out, firefighters spent most of the morning sifting through debris and checking for hot spots. Crews left the scene around 1:15 p.m., officials said.

The Cary Fire Protection District was assisted by crews from Fox River Grove, Nunda Rural, Crystal Lake, Lake Zurich, West Dundee and Wonder Lake.
