Two injured in pipe bomb explosion

INGLESIDE – An Ingleside man was in critical condition Saturday after a pipe bomb he was working on exploded and badly injured him and another man, police said.

The Fox Lake Fire Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded about 6:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of an explosion inside a barn in the 3300 block of Wilson Road, Ingelside.

Kristopher Carlson, 20, of Ingelside and Frank Dumelle, 19, of Round Lake were reportedly making explosives when one of their home-made bombs exploded, police said.

“We don’t think that the men were with any type of terrorist network or radical group. They were just some kids experimenting,” said a spokesman from the sheriff’s department.

Carlson was taken by paramedics to Centegra Hospital – McHenry with severe facial burns and later moved to a burn center in Rockford, the spokesman said. Dumelle complained of a hearing loss and also was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
