Man fires shot near salesman

FOX RIVER GROVE – A Fox River Grove man has been charged after police said he fired a shot when two men selling magazine subscriptions came to his door.

Mark A. Molenaar, 50, of 105 South Road, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony.

He was released after posting 10 percent of a $15,000 bond.

About 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, deputies from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Fox River Grove Police Department responded to a “shots fired” call in the 100 block of South Road.

It is an unincorporated area.

The salesmen had gone to Molenaar’s home and sometime during the interaction, Molenaar produced a Smith & Wesson revolver, police said.

He allegedly fired one round into the ground, and the men fled. No one was injured.

Molenaar admitted to having the gun and said that it accidentally went off, Lt. James Wagner of the Sheriff’s Office said.

Police said they found the revolver and several other firearms in Molemaar’s home but said he did not have a valid Firearm Owner Identification Card.

The firearms were seized.
