Prairie Ridge grad awarded scholarship for up to $25K

OAKWOOD HILLS – A Prairie Ridge High School graduate was awarded a scholarship of up to $25,000 from the former leader of one of America’s most iconic companies.

Danielle Davis, 18, of Oakwood Hills was one of five students to be named 2011-12 Goizueta Scholars.

The scholarship was established in 2000 on behalf of former Coca-Cola Co. Chairman and CEO Roberto C. Goizueta, who died in 1997 after running the company for 16 years.

For Davis, it made selecting a college a much easier decision.

“It took the money factor out of where to go to school,” she said.

It also will make college much more affordable. Davis plans to study technical theater at Millikin University in Decatur. She wants to do behind-the-scenes work for theater productions.

The scholarship is given to the children of employees on the basis of academic achievement, community service, work experience, career goals and financial need, according to a news release. The undergraduate scholarships are renewable for three more years or until the student earns a bachelor’s degree.

Danielle Davis is the daughter of Karen Davis, an administrative assistant based in Schaumburg.

The Goizueta Scholars Fund has given out more than $3.7 million in scholarships to 77 students in the past 11 years.
