Bears’ Omiyale eager to start

LAKE FOREST – Bears offensive lineman Frank Omiyale did not complain after he was demoted to backup duty a week into the preseason.

Now, an injury to rookie Gabe Carimi has given Omiyale another chance to practice with the first team. Omiyale will start at right tackle Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

“It was frustrating [not starting], but decisions were made, and my goal was just to get on board and make sure I made the team so I was around for this situation,” Omiyale said Thursday. “It’s here, and I want to make the most of it.”

Omiyale has started 29 regular-season games and two playoff games in his seven-year NFL career.

Last season, he started two games at right tackle and 16 games at left tackle, including a pair of playoff appearances against Seattle and Green Bay.

“I’m probably more comfortable at left [tackle],” said Omiyale, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds. “But I’m hungry, so I’m going to go eat.”

On the sidelines: Carimi’s knee injury will prevent him from playing the Packers, which was the team he cheered for as a child growing up near Madison, Wis.

“We get to play them again, so I’m looking forward to that,” Carimi said.

Carimi said he was not permitted to discuss his injury, which is a common refrain among Bears players. He did acknowledge the risk of returning too soon.

Some reports have pegged Carimi’s recovery period at four to six weeks.

“You always have to make sure when you come back, it’s for the whole season,” Carimi said. “No one wants you to come back for a half a game, and then miss more.”

Bears bits: Wide receiver Roy Williams participated fully in practice Thursday, which is a good sign heading into Sunday’s game. Williams sat out in Week 2 because of a groin injury. … Safety Major Wright (head/neck) remained out along with teammates Earl Bennett (chest) and Carimi (knee). … Three players were limited in practice because of injuries: Marion Barber (calf), Chris Harris (hamstring) and Lance Louis (ankle).
