CL couple puts baby-name dispute to Facebook vote

CRYSTAL LAKE – Unable to decide on a name for their unborn child, a Crystal Lake couple plans to settle the matter with a Facebook poll.

Lindsey Meske, 24, wanted to name their second daughter McKenna or Addilyne. Husband Dave Meske, 27, wanted Madelyn or Emily.

At an impasse, they posted a Facebook poll with the names online for family and friends to vote. But Dave Meske realized that his wife had more Facebook friends and the decision likely would go in her favor. So they opened it up to everyone at namemychild.info.

Ultimately, the name of their baby girl, due in January, could be decided by strangers. And in the process, they might tick off another Facebook first.

“We’re the first people to do this,” Dave Meske said Thursday. “It’s a neat little experiment.”

Since going public with the story, the Meskes have been flooded with calls from regional news reporters.

“It’s been crazy,” Dave Meske said. “All day I’ve been getting phone calls. Now I want to go on ‘Ellen’ and take it national.”

The name Madelyn was ahead in the poll Thursday night with a two-vote lead. McKenna was next, followed by Emily and Addilyne. But there’s still plenty of time for Addilyne to advance in the standings. The couple plans to keep the voting open until at least December, Dave Meske said.

They are committed to honoring the outcome of the poll.

“Whatever name wins is going to be the name of our daughter,” Dave Meske said.

Family members and friends of the couple already have weighed in. Even their 4-year-old daughter, Brianna, whose name they picked with ease, has taken a side, backing her mother in favor of McKenna.

Most people have been supportive of the couple’s quest, but some in online forums have called their parenting skills into question. Dave Meske defended their choice.

“It’s not like we’re letting people come up with a name,” he said. “We’ll be fine with any of the four.”

Regardless of which name prevails, they plan to let their daughter know how it was picked and have started saving newspaper articles and other news media coverage.

“She’ll have an amazing story to tell,” Dave Meske said.
