Couple charged with stealing $140 K from elderly man
WONDER LAKE – A Wonder Lake couple is free on bond after being accused of taking about $140,000 from a 96-year-old man.
Rosemary Zink, 58, and Timothy W. Zink, 59, both of 2814 E. Chestnut Drive, were both charged with unlawful financial exploitation of an elderly person. It is a Class 1 felony typically punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
According to the criminal complaint, the Zinks "while standing in a position of trust and confidence" with the victim knowingly and by deception obtained control over bank accounts at Chase Bank. The dates of the alleged offense were from May 21, 2010 to June 16, 2011.
Undersheriff Andrew Zinke declined to say what the relationship is between the victim and the Zinks but said they were caregivers.
The investigation began in July when the man, who is a McHenry County resident, was transported to a local hospital where it was determined that he needed hearing aids, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. After he was discharged from the hospital, he went to the bank to get money to buy the hearing aids, but found that the account balance was about $30. About $140,000 was missing.
The investigation led to several records identifying the Zinks. They were arrested Thursday and have since posted their $40,000 bonds.
Elder abuse does not always involve physical harm, but can also involve personal property and finances, including investments, cash and real estate.
"Quite often the offenders in these investigations turn out to be complete strangers, newly developed 'friends' who take a sudden interest in the elderly subject, caretakers, and even relatives," according the sheriff's office.
