Illini doomed by another slow start

CHAMPAIGN – At halftime Saturday, Ron Zook felt lucky his team wasn’t down by a bunch.

The Illini had 30 yards of offense, one first down and hadn’t gotten near midfield. And yet Michigan was up just 14-0.

“I thought when we were only down 14 at halftime we had a chance because it could have been 48 to nothing,” Zook said.

Illinois scored late in the third quarter to pull to within 17-7, but then quickly fell apart, falling to the 22nd-ranked Wolverines (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten), 31-14.

For the fourth straight week the Illini (6-4, 2-4) didn’t score in the first half, and they’ve lost four straight, wasting a 6-0 start that once had Illinois making big post-season plans.

“When we were 6-0 we had all the confidence in the world,” said receiver A.J. Jenkins, who finished with eight catches and 103 yards. “Everything that for that reason seemed to go right, and now we have a four-game losing streak.”

While Michigan’s defense was dominant, Wolverines running back Fitzgerald Toussaint ran for 192 yards and a touchdown while backup quarterback Devin Gardner, in relief of the injured Denard Robinson, threw a key fourth-quarter TD pass, finding Martavious Odoms in the end zone for a 24-7 lead just after Illinois scored.

Robinson scored two rushing touchdowns, but didn’t play after a big third-quarter hit bruised his wrist. Michigan was still up just 14-0 at the time and head coach Brady Hoke said he could have returned, but the coach didn’t feel like he needed to.

“Devin was doing some good things,” Hoke said. “I thought he made a really nice play when he stepped up in the pocket to Martavious and threw that touchdown pass.”

At halftime, Illinois had 30 yards of offense at the half, including minus-12 on the ground, and not one point on the board. They didn’t move the ball into Wolverines territory until late in the third quarter.

“Any time you get in the game and don’t start off the way you want to, guys can kind of press the issue,” Scheelhaase said, “and it would probably make it easier on yourself if you started out strong.”
