Smith: McNabb is 'great player'

After the Minnesota Vikings released quarterback Donovan McNabb, many NFL observers questioned whether the Bears would be interested in claiming the Chicago native on waivers.

Bears coach Lovie Smith did not divulge many clues after Thursday’s practice at Halas Hall.

“He’s been a great player in the league, but I don’t speculate on anything else besides that,” Smith said. “Great player in the league, great guy. I don’t know any more about it than what you’re telling me now.”

McNabb, 35, has thrown for more than 37,000 yards and 234 touchdowns in parts of 13 NFL seasons. He lost his starting job to rookie Christian Ponder earlier this season.

The Bears signed Josh McCown to provide quarterback depth last week, but McNabb could provide a better option behind Caleb Hanie. Earlier this week, injured quarterback Jay Cutler acknowledged that he might miss the rest of the season because of his broken right thumb.
