Our view: In new year, politicians must resolve to improve

Eating healther. Exercising more. Quitting smoking.

Sound familiar? Those probably are the three most popular resolutions made every time a new year rolls around.

You, undoubtedly, have compiled a list a resolutions for yourself. We hope those we’ve elected to represent us at the local, state and federal levels of government have done so as well.

In case they haven’t, we have developed a list of recommended resolutions in 2012 for governmental agencies:

• For all lawmakers to get past partisan bickering and embrace a working relationship consisting of compromise.

• For lawmakers at the federal level to make decisions based on what is best for the American people instead of on the basis that it is an election year and you will do only what it takes to get re-elected.

• For lawmakers at the state and federal level to make it less about the lobbyists and more about the people.

• For Congress to get federal spending under control, take the necessary steps to turn the economy around, examine the federal tax code, and tackle meaningful Social Security and Medicare reform.

• For state lawmakers to stop ignoring the elephant in the room: Illinois’ pension crisis. Not only does future pension benefits need reform, but there is the $85 billion the state is behind in pension fund payments.

• For state lawmakers to take a hard look at spending and cutting the waste.

• For lawmakers in Springfield to mandate that the state pay its bills.

• For state lawmakers to practice what they preach when it comes to ethics and ethics reform.

• For lawmakers in Springfield to make Illinois more business friendly.

• For local governments, to attract new businesses to fill empty storefronts.

• For local governments and school boards to live within their means. Taxpayers already are stretched thin. Please don’t ask for more from them.
