The Crystal Lake Police Department announced the recent graduation of Sgt. Thomas Kretschmer from the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University.

Kretschmer completed the 10-week program from Sept. 26 to Dec. 9 in Evanston.

This program, which was implemented in 1983 by the Center for Public Safety, has graduated more than 14,000 students nationally and internationally.

Kretschmer was a student in Class 322, which had 15 students.

The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in 22 core or mandatory blocks of instruction and uses nine additional optional blocks of instruction during each session. The major topics are management and management theory, organizational behavior, human resources for law enforcement, budgeting, staff allocation, and personnel deployment.

Each student takes 18 written examinations, projects and quizzes in addition to two research papers. Upon completion, students may be awarded a total of eight unit of undergraduate credit from Northwestern University.

The Crystal Lake Police Department is looking forward to a variety of benefits from Kretschmer's participation in the program. Many of the program's graduates go on to leadership positions within their respective agencies. Currently, more than 750 graduations hold the title of police chief and 39 of the 50 directors of state police agencies also are program graduates.
