Cubs trade Cashner to Padres for Rizzo in four-player deal
CHICAGO – The Cubs rebuilding process took another step forward in a four-player deal that landed them coveted first base prospect Anthony Rizzo.
The Cubs send right-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na to San Diego for Rizzo and right-handed pitcher Zach Cates. Rizzo, 22, hit .331 with 34 doubles, 26 home runs and 101 RBIs in 93 games from Triple-A Tuscon last season. In 49 major league games, Rizzo batted .141 with eight doubles, one triple, one homer & nine RBIs.
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein originally drafted Rizzo in Boston with their 6th round pick in the 2007 draft.
Cashner, 24, leaves the Cubs after two big league seasons with the organization. He missed nearly the entire 2011 season after suffering a right rotator cuff injury during his first start of the season in April. He returned in September pitching out of the bullpen and appeared in six games including the season finale in San Diego. Cashner finishes his Cubs career with a 2-6 record and 4.29 ERA in 60 games.
