Cubs sign left-handed pitcher Maholm

CHICAGO – The Cubs officially announced the signing of left-hander Paul Maholm to a one-year deal with a club option for 2013.

Maholm, who went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA last season for the Pirates, initially broke the news on his Twitter account (@paul_maholm) Monday night thanking Pittsburgh fans for their support during his seven-year stint with the team.

Maholm, 29, also tweeted "Looking forward to seeing the fans at Cubs convention this weekend and getting to know all the guys. It's gonna be fun."

A former 2003 first round draft pick by the Pirates, Maholm is 53-73 in his career with a 4.36 ERA. In 11 career starts at Wrigley Field, Maholm is 6-2 though has a 5.48 ERA in 64 innings pitched. However last season, he posted a 1-0 mark and did not allow a run in two starts at Wrigley.
