Cubs strike deals with six players to avoid arbitration

CHICAGO – The Cubs reached one-year contracts with six of their seven arbitration eligible players Tuesday.

Infielders Jeff Baker, Blake Dewitt and Ian Stewart, catcher Geovany Soto and right-handed pitchers Chris Volstad and Randy Wells agreed to terms leaving pitcher Matt Garza as the lone Cub headed to arbitration. Garza reportedly filed a request for $10.225 million while the Cubs submitted an offer at $7.95 million.
