GRANITE CITY (AP) – Illinois State Police investigators are trying to figure out what happened to a man who died five days after collapsing in police custody in his southwestern Illinois hometown of Granite City.

State police say 56-year-old Shannon Walsh collapsed after being arrested Jan. 19 on traffic offenses. He died Tuesday at a hospital.

Results of an autopsy Wednesday haven't yet been released.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that state police Capt. James Morrisey isn't publicly discussing whether Walsh struggled with officers, saying the investigation continues.

Granite City Police Maj. Jeff Connor says no officers have been placed on leave since Walsh's collapse.
