CRYSTAL LAKE – A couple who let Facebook users vote on the name of their second child, had a 7-pound, 14-ounce daughter at 8:31 a.m. Tuesday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
The baby girl’s name, which received 1,310 votes, is Madelyn Meske.
Dave and Lindsey Meske of Crystal Lake allowed Facebook users to vote on four choices after they had an impasse over the baby’s name. Dave Meske, 27, liked Madelyn or Emily, and Lindsey Meske, 24, preferred McKenna or Addilyne.
There were 4,200 votes: Emily received 1,265 votes, McKenna received 938 votes and Addilyne received 687 votes.
Voting started in September and was kept open until Tuesday, Dave Meske said as Lindsey Meske rested.
Voting went on for six days longer than planned. Madelyn was expected on Jan. 25.
There were a handful of changes in the standings during the vote.
“Emily” was able to jump up to second place after being in last place until early December.
A majority of the contest, however, was a “neck-and-neck” race between McKenna and Madelyn.
“Madelyn” was under consideration for the Meskes’ first daughter, Dave Meske said.
The couple, however, easily came to an agreement on their 4-year-old daughter’s name Brianna.
The couple received some comments about the names, including that McKenna is a surname in different parts of the world.
Co-workers, friends and family members all voted, and there were votes from across the United States, Europe and Australia. Stories about the online vote were linked on websites in Iceland and Norway, Dave Meske said.
“We never would have thought 4,200 people would help pick our daughter’s name,” Dave Meske said.
“Really, how did this get that big?” Dave Meske added.
The family also made “propaganda” posters including “Vote Madelyn” or “Vote Emily,” “Vote Addilyne,” or “Vote McKenna.”
The Meskes kept newspapers and plan to tell Madelyn the story of how she was named.
“It’s a neat story to tell her,” Dave Meske said.
