CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, whose body was found in the trunk of his car.
Charles Randal of Bellwood was found guilty Friday by a Cook County jury in the April 2009 death of 35-year-old Fertamina Smith, also of Bellwood.
Smith was last seen on her way to church with Randal. Her family reported her missing two days later.
Police found Smith's body after Randal's attorney flagged down a squad car and said he wanted to report a crime.
Police say Randal had given his attorney his car keys and told him the body was inside. Smith died of a gunshot through the heart.
The 40-year-old Randal claimed the shooting was an accident.
