McCullom Lake settles details for village hall

McCULLOM LAKE – The Village Board has finalized its estimated costs for a new village hall, which is scheduled to be completed this summer.

The new hall is expected to cost about $580,000, Village President Terry Counley said. The project budget is $625,000, Counley said. The costs were finalized this week.

Work is scheduled to begin the week of March 5 with demolition of the current village hall’s pole barn. The original beach house is slated to be kept.

Village officials hope to move into the new building in August.

Most of the work will be completed by local contractors, Counley said.

The main frame of the project and the walls will be built offsite in a warehouse in Indiana, Counley said. Then the pieces will be transported in sections and assembled on site.

The new village hall will be the same size, 6,000 square feet, and sit on the site of the pole barn, Counley said.

The project is being paid for with bonds sold by the village. Those bonds will be paid back over 19 years with the village’s existing utility tax. Taxes will not increase for the project, Counley said.

In October, the village authorized borrowing up to $700,000 for the project.

The new building will continue to serve as a rental hall and will house village offices, as well as the police department and public works.

Day-to-day administrative and police operations have been moved into trailers on site.

Village Board meetings have been moved to the Evangelical Free Church at 2614 Ringwood Road until the project is complete. Residents whose polling place is the village hall will have their polling place moved to the church as well for the March 20 election.

The steel pole barn portion of the village hall was built in the 1970s.

Repairs, including a roof replacement, mold remediation, new walls and insulation, were estimated to cost about $200,000, village officials have said.

The new village hall will hold up to 148 people, Counley said.

Counley said the new village hall will include a view of the lake.

“We might as well take advantage of the great scenery,” Counley said.
