Museum plans program about Civil War regiment

WEST DUNDEE – The Dundee Township Historical Society will present “The Heroes of the 52nd” on Sunday.

The program will begin at 2 p.m. at the museum, 426 Highland Ave., West Dundee.

The 52nd Illinois Infantry Volunteers were known by locals as the Dundee regiment because of the large number of Dundee-area men who were assigned to the unit.

When President Abraham Lincoln put out his call to arms, the Dundee men and those in the surrounding area answered the call. They went to Geneva to enlist and soon found themselves in the thick of battle, a life-and-death fight for the Union.

Guests will learn of their travels through the South and the battles in which they took part. Excerpts from a Civil War diary will be shared, as well as letters and personal recollections of some of the infamous conflicts of the war.

The public is invited. There is no fee. Donations would be appreciated. For information, call the museum at 847-428-6996.
