Fire damages Crystal Lake home
CRYSTAL LAKE – A fire early Sunday morning caused about $20,000 in damage to a Crystal Lake home.
A man inside the home at 899 Nottingham Lane was awakened by a smoke detector shortly after 3:30 a.m., Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department officials said.
Firefighters could see smoke and flames in the rear of the house when they arrived. They had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
Investigators reported the fire appears to have started in an outdoor light fixture near the kitchen. It spread up the outside wall of the home, into the eaves, and then into the attic above the kitchen. No one was injured.
Crystal Lake firefighters called in help from Algonquin, Cary, East Dundee, Fox River Grove, Huntley, Lakewood, Nunda Rural, McHenry and Wonder Lake.
Although firefighters continue to investigate the cause, it appears to have been accidental, officials said.
Renovation work had been under way at the home, which wasn't lived in regularly, said Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department Lt. Kirk Kiermas.
Damage from the fire left the home uninhabitable.
