Whose community?

To the Editor:

Mayor Aaron Shepley and the Crystal Lake City Council recently voted “no” to allowing a private citizen to open a small business in downtown Crystal Lake. The mayor said a pawnshop “doesn’t fit in our community.”

Whose community? Did they talk to all the residents about this one particular business? I’d like to know why six people, in a city of more than 40,000, decided that a business, which could provide local revenue and jobs, was not allowed to open.
