A 21-year-old man was killed late Sunday when his truck struck a tree on Hickory Lane off Greenwood Road in Hebron Township, officials said.
The man, whose identity will not be released until his family is notified, was the only occupant in the red 1998 GMC Sonoma pickup, said Deputy Coroner Robert Locke of the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Department responded at 11:27 p.m. Sunday to the accident in the 8700 block of Hickory Lane, said sheriff’s Sgt. Karen Groves.
“The vehicle went off of the road to the south and then came back on the road and then went off of the road on the north side and struck a couple of trees before it came to rest,” Groves said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 minutes after the crash, Locke said, who listed the cause of death as head and neck trauma.
Geoffery Godshall, a Hickory Lane resident, was the first to the scene.
He told the Northwest Herald on Monday morning that he dialed 9-1-1 and tried to reach the victim to administer emergency medical care.
The victim’s pickup struck a mailbox and several trees on Hickory Lane before it crashed into a large tree in Godshall’s neighbor’s yard, he said.
“It was painfully obvious he was driving too fast,” Godshall said.
Sheriff’s officials still are investigating the cause of the crash, Groves said.
The victim was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, she said.
