2 arrested in fake pot case in Lakemoor

LAKEMOOR – Two McHenry residents face felony charges after police seized about 45 pounds of synthetic marijuana from a smoke shop in Lakemoor.

William J. Hubick, 61, and Cheryl Loconti, 53, were charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, Class 3 felonies. They were arrested Thursday outside Lakemoor Village Hall after trustees revoked their license to operate a business in the village.

Hubick and Loconti operate The Roll Zone at 28875 Route 120 in Lakemoor. Police began investigating the business three months ago when a tipster said they sell “high-quality synthetic cannabis,” the Lakemoor Police Department said in a news release.

Undercover police, on four occasions, bought the product at the store, Lakemoor Police Chief Bill Kushner said. Three of the four purchases tested positive for compounds that are banned in the state, he added. The fourth still is being analyzed.

Synthetic marijuana, also known as Spice, K2, K4, or potpourri, was banned earlier this year when Illinois expanded the list of products on the Controlled Substances Act. The synthetic product mimics the effects of marijuana.

“It’s literally become a new designer drug,” Kushner said. “It’s bad stuff. I’m not a chemist by any stretch of imagination, but when you start looking at the names of the compounds in these, they’re frightening.”

Hubick and Loconti were released on bond. Hubick’s bond was set at $10,000 and Loconti’s at $5,000. Hubick had two felony charges and Loconti had one.

A weapon also was recovered, and further charges are pending, Kushner said, while the weapon is being checked to verify its registration.

The Roll Zone has been open for 18 months, Kushner said. For the license revocation, The Roll Zone was fined $700 and no longer can operate in the village.
