CHICAGO – The Bears signed fourth-round draft pick Evan Rodriguez and seventh-round draft pick Greg McCoy to four-year contracts Tuesday. The pair joined second-round pick Alshon Jeffery, who signed a four-year deal with the Bears last week.
Rodriguez (6-foot-2, 239 pounds), a tight end from Temple, was the No. 111 pick in last month’s NFL draft.
McCoy (5-10, 178) excelled as a kick returner for TCU. He was the No. 220 pick and the Bears’ final selection.
Hawks fire assistant coach Haviland
CHICAGO – Mike Haviland was fired Tuesday as an assistant coach for the Blackhawks after coach Joel Quenneville determined there was “dysfunction” on the staff last season.
The Hawks’ power play scored only 42 times in 82 games (15.2 percent), 24th in the 30-team NHL. The penalty kill ranked 27th, allowing goals on 21.9 percent of opposing chances.
Quenneville said Haviland started the season in charge of the power play but a switch was made and it became the responsibility of assistant coach Mike Kitchen, who took the brunt of criticism for its ineffectiveness.
