Lakewood family digs dachshunds

Diane Schuchert of Crystal Lake carries pans filled with dachshund-shaped cookies as she prepares for today's Cross Town Bark Around Fundraiser and Dachshund Social at DuPage County Fairgrounds. The event benefits the Midwest Dachshund Rescue.

LAKEWOOD – The Schuchert family spent much of the day Friday baking loads of treats – some for people and some for dachshunds.

The treats will be sold alongside scores of other, mainly dachshund-themed items at the Crosstown Bark Around Fundraiser and Dachshund Social. The event raises money for the nonprofit Midwest Dachshund Rescue.

It will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 W. Manchester Road, Wheaton. Admission is $5 for adults.

Diane Schuchert made and packaged several kinds of chocolate candies in the shape of dachshunds and all-natural treats for dachshunds. She got help in her Lakewood kitchen from daughter Brooke and her friend Emily Turik. Diane’s son Beau and his girlfriend, Janelle O’Malley, also pitched in.

The family’s two dachshunds, Tillie and Bubbie, watched.

Diane Schuchert got involved with Midwest Dachshund Rescue several years ago when she started making coats for the long-bodied dogs. She later adopted Bubbie from the rescue group and has been helping out at the fundraiser for the past four years.

“I believe in giving back. It’s really important,” she said. “And this is such a great cause.”

The event will feature free hot dogs, wiener races, raffles, silent auctions, a bake sale, nail trimming and micro-chipping. There also will be dachshunds to adopt.

The event is open to people and dachshunds.

The nonprofit group raised about $20,000 at last year’s event. This year’s goal is to top that, Diane Schuchert said.
