McHenry County bee champ gets set for return trip to national contest

CRYSTAL LAKE – Lucas Urbanski was annoyed by the spell-check program on his family’s computer.

The 12-year-old Crystal Lake boy disabled the feature – to the chagrin of his family – because it didn’t recognize enough of the more than 23,000 words on the Scripps National Spelling Bee Consolidated Word List. The program got in the way when he was studying words with a friend via Skype, a video chat service.

His twin sister, Clare, wasn’t pleased when she found out.
