CRYSTAL LAKE – The Tartan, McHenry County College's student newspaper, earned four awards from the Illinois Community College Journalism Association this spring.

The newspaper got an honorable mention for the Mike Foster Award for overall Excellence in a competition with other colleges throughout the state.

Tartan staff writer Octavio Ocampo got first place for an article about modern hip-hop music.

Fellow staff writer Carrie Wolff got third place in the opinion category.

Tartan Editor Abby Potash came in second place in the arts and entertainment category for an article about an MCC talent show.

Potash said she was pleased with the newspaper's showing at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association's spring conference. The Tartan took home three awards last year.

"My goal was to continually raise the bar and I think we've done that," she said.

Potash praised the work Tartan staff members.

"At a community college there is usually a revolving door, but we've been blessed with a great staff," she said.

Twenty-three colleges took part in the competition at Malcom X College in Chicago on March 30.

The Tartan is published monthly and print copies are distributed free on MCC's Crystal Lake campus.
