Living memorial

To the Editor:

Mr. Patrick Murfin’s letter (June 1) regarding Seaman 2nd Class Thomas Lounsbury, who went down with the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, was a fine tribute to Thomas and his family.

Perhaps Mr. Murfin is unaware that the flag the Lounsbury family donated to the church was not their only memorial to their son. On the South Street side of the historic Congregational Church in Woodstock stands a maple tree, which was planted as a living memorial to Lounsbury. It bears witness to the ultimate sacrifice made by him and his family.
