After David Mahachek, 64, of Crystal Lake, went through surgery in January 2010 to remove his prostate because of cancer, he had difficulty breathing, and he had a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in his lungs.

Doctors put a filter into Mahachek’s body to try to catch future clots, and he started taking blood thinner medication.
