Deep vein thrombosis a serious problem that’s fairly common

After David Mahachek, 64, of Crystal Lake, went through surgery in January 2010 to remove his prostate because of cancer, he had difficulty breathing, and he had a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in his lungs.

Doctors think that another blood clot, this one in his right calf, was a complication of the surgery, Mahachek said.

Doctors put a filter into Mahachek’s body to try to catch future clots, and he started taking blood thinner medication.
