McHenry County Habitat funding restored

WOODSTOCK – Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County got the $100,000 in federal funding that its former sponsorship of a fledgling affordable housing group had jeopardized.

The McHenry County Board voted Tuesday, 18-3 with one abstention, to grant Habitat the money for its “A Brush With Kindness” program for critical home repairs for low-income residents. The Department of Housing and Urban Development funding was held up when county staff determined that Habitat’s effort to help the McHenry County Attainable Housing Corp. access HUD money constituted a conflict of interest.

The corporation is led by Kris Koehler, son of County Board Chairman Ken Koehler, R-Crystal Lake. Chairman Koehler abstained from Tuesday’s vote.
